HASSELL STUDIO

Architect: Hassell Studio // Photography: Nicole England Stylecraft's home is situated on the corner of Flinders Lane and Russell Street in Melbourne's CBD. The heritage listed building is one of the last original brick warehouse offices that has endured the test of time in the Flinders Lane precinct. Built between 1910 and 1913 by Clements Langford, the building was designed by H.W. & F.B Tompkins, prominent architects of the time and designers of the iconic Myer building. The building retains its beautiful, original Romanesque arch windows and ornate columns cementing its character and giving us a glimpse of that 'old-world' charm. Over the years the building has been home to many occupants, however in 2005 it received a new lease on life when Stylecraft's team moved in. After extensive renovations, May 2018 saw the unveiling of Melbourne's very own StylecraftHOME showroom. A space designed by Hassell Studio and constructed by FDC Construction, the showroom occupies both the ground and lower ground floors showcasing Stylecraft's wonderful collection of residential furniture. The concept behind the lighting design was to create a warm and inviting ethos, as if you were entering the comfort of someone's home. The space is not over-lit, instead lighting was used to highlight architectural features, keeping a comfortable and cosy atmosphere. General track and track spots were used to accommodate the changing furniture displays, whilst concealed LED strip was used to graze and wash pelmets and joinery details. It was also important for the lighting design to complement Stylecraft's own range of floor and table lamps. The prime location of the building was also an important factor to consider whilst creating the lighting design. With heavy street and foot traffic, the interior lighting captures your attention especially in the evening, enticing you and drawing you into the world of Stylecraft!
